Volunteering is new to me, my first session was on New Years Eve 2018. I was greeted warmly by the team made up of staff and volunteers, but I felt very apprehensive going into the unknown. I was happy to do whatever needed doing. My day was made up of chatting to clients, making teas and coffees with at least 4 sugars in and sorting through the clothes and shoes mound into some order. At the end of my first day I explained that I could give up a minimum of one day a month but would do more if I could. I came away that day feeling humbled by the other volunteers I met and by the warmth and kindness shown to me by the clients. I am hoping to continue to gain the trust of the clients and help them move forward on their journey.
Volunteering at Open Door has been a life changing experience for me. I very much appreciate my life and everything I have. I continue to support Open Door. I go in monthly and gather donations to take in when I visit. The work that this charity does is amazing and I’m so proud to be part of it!
