Open Door exists to support rough sleepers and those who are in temporary accommodation.

Doors open at 9:30 for rough sleepers who can have hot showers, breakfast and clothes washed and dried. Clients are also able to access our donated clothing store. In the mornings we have the Outreach Team who offer practical advice and support about housing, addictions and health.

In addition to this daily support we have volunteers who provide a reading group, a make and mend group and people who are there to read the paper and have a chat with. We also have support from the Samaritans and various other groups daily.

Following on from this is our tailored support packages which offer practical advice and guidance in the short and longer term. For more information contact Open Door.

The Open Door team

Our ethos

Together we can

Open Door’s ethos is rooted in the conviction that each individual has the potential to build a fulfilling and happy life, depending, when necessary, on the support of others.

Open Door is a place of unconditional acceptance of each individual, just as they are.  Everyone is special, everyone has their story and everyone deserves acceptance, time, dignity and respect.  We do not judge nor control.

We firstly seek to address the most practical immediate needs of those who are living on the streets, such as the need for food, shelter, clothing, showers, laundry and for company.

However that is only the first step.  We are not aiming simply to enable people to just survive on the streets.  Rather we aim to empower people to first move on into sustainable accommodation, where they then can be in a position to address any challenges which they may be facing.  Together we can.

How to Volunteer

About us

A brief history

For many years the people of Taunton have been showing care and concern for the most vulnerable members of the local community.  As far back as the late 1970’s there have been a variety of initiatives focussing on the needs of street homeless men and women, including lunch clubs, night shelters and soup runs.  These led to the formation of a regular day centre in limited premise in 2001.  After 8 years serving from there, we moved to larger fit-for-purpose premise, where we are still based now.
